When The Sun Goes Down We'll Go Out Again

Sasquatch Music Festival 09. I saw the best music a person can see crammed into three days. Bon Iver, Explosions In The Sky, The Avett Brothers, M. Ward. Sang songs in the dark till 3am. I was with my best friends. I bathed in the lake every morning. Spent 5 dollars on a 20 oz. of Coke-a-Cola. Bought a Sasquatch watch. I got a trucker hat. played UNO. Shared head phones. Got more than one tattoo. Saw a sunset.
Summer is good.

Hold Time

Every time I leave home to come back to school I usually make 3 or 4 mix cd's for my mom and dad. I love it when I  come home the next time and they are listening to one of the mixes in the car and can sing along with all the words.
I have "hip" parents. Their love for music has helped me to love music too. When I was younger I always loved what they listened to. I can remember riding around in our old beater Green Car (aka The Green Bomb) and them singing Kris Kristofferson songs because the radio didn't work. Every time we went on road trips we would listen to James Taylor, Neil Diamond and David Allen Coe.
The best birthday present I've ever received was a walkman tape player with The Beach Boys Greatest Hits cassette. I listened to that tape so much that it completely wore out.

I put this song on a mix for Mom and Dad around Christmas and it has quickly become a Gibson Family favorite.

I’ll say goodbye to the canyons. I will set sail to the streets

Salt Lake City. Last night I went to little show with some friends. Manchester Orchestra headlined, but I went to see Nate Ruess' new band, Fun, and they were amazing. It made me remember why I love the Format so much. Nate is one of the best performers I've seen. All of the new songs were really great live. He sang a few Format songs too. I was blown away by The First Single. He added a whole other verse to the middle of the song. I got a little choked up. You could really feel the emotion in the song. I really like the First Single, but I've never thought of it as a deep song. . . now I do.
I really love my friends too. It was really good to be with everyone last night. Some of my best memories are at Denny's after shows.

Birmingham 1982

Dinner call in the late afternoon
The sun step down for the moon
Story books, night lights
And I still remember songs
Pianos sing along
And the coloured sounds of spring
Its harmony
Do you still remember?
Fireflies, four-leaf clovers
Fingerpainted skin
Where life was a reaction
And love was just laughing with a friend

Down out in the backyard stream
Make a wish for your dream
Maybe a kiss maybe a ring
And I still remember songs
The banjos sing along
And the crisp sound of fall
I still recall
Do you still remember?

Flashlights under covers
Raindrops on my tongue
When life had no distractions
And love wasn't hurting anyone

Fireflies, four-leaf clovers
Fingerpainted skin
We don't know where we're going
We'll get nowhere if we've forgotten where we've been

Rave On

It's really funny when you hear song that you've never heard before and as you listen you can relate to it 100%, or the song writing and music go together so well that it gives you chills. All you can think about for a week is that ONE song that you heard last Monday. You're so excited about the song that you share it with all your friends. The funny thing is, when your friends hear the song they don't seem to be too impressed and say things like, "it's ok". Ok?
Well today I was on the "ok" side of things. I love NPR. I subscribe to their 'All Songs Considered' podcast and listen to it devotedly every monday. I read their daily blogs. I really value the opinion the have on music. Today, however, Bob Boilen (creater and host of 'All Songs...') posted a song on his blog this afternoon and I thought it was, well . . . ok. He first heard the song in 1965 and said that every time he has heard it for these 44 years its given him chills.
I listened to it and liked it, but it wasn't life changing or anything. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I can relate with all of you who I annoy all the time by sending you songs and music telling you to listen to it. At the same time I'm glad that music is intimate and can mean different things to all of us. I probably won't stop annoying my friends with my musical discoveries, but I won't think anything is wrong with you if you don't like what I love.
